Andrias
People often call the salamanders in the genus Andrias “giant salamanders.” Giant salamanders live up to their names and can get very big. This means that they are only good pets for people who have enough room for them and know how to take care of them.
The Chinese giant salamander, which is a species, is the largest salamander in the world (A. davidianus). When it’s fully grown, a Chinese giant salamander can grow to be about four feet long and weigh more than sixty pounds.
Desmognathus
People call them “dusky salamanders.” This group is also made up of the spotted dusky salamander (D. conanti) and the pygmy salamander (D. wrighti).
Notophthalmus
Notophthalmus is a species of newt found in eastern North America.The Eastern Newt (N. viridescens), which has bright orange spots and is known for being hard to care for, is a popular pet in the United States.
Cynops
Cynops is a type of newt that lives in China and Japan. The fire-bellied newt (C. pyrrhogaster), also called the fire newt, is the most well-known member of this genus. This species is a popular pet that can live up to 25 years and grows to be four to five inches long.
Taricha
People like to keep the California newt as a pet, even though it is poisonous like other species in its genus.
You should always wash your hands after touching a California newt because it makes a poison that can kill you if you eat it. Even so, California newts are a common pet salamander.
