Can dogs eat cream of wheat? Most people would say, “No way!” Dogs are supposed to have a very limited palate, after all. But, there’s a surprising (and somewhat controversial) reason why dogs can enjoy cream of wheat… and you will never guess what it is!

Cream of Wheat

An enhanced wheat product called Cream of Wheat is prepared by grinding the grain. It’s a great morning cereal when blended with boiling water or hot milk. It is a good source of calcium and fiber for dogs when included in dog treat recipes. The powdered form eliminates the need to heat the ingredient before adding it to a recipe. If your dog has a wheat allergy, you can feed them Cream of Wheat. If this is the case, Cream of Rice can be used in its place.

Can Dogs Eat Cream of Wheat?

Cooked ground wheat and boiling water are all that is needed to make Cream of Wheat. This may either be made from scratch or thickened by pouring milk into it after thickening. Sugar or cinnamon can also be sprinkled on top for additional flavor.

Invented in Grand Forks, North Dakota, Cream of Wheat dates back to 1893. Tom Amidon, a miller at the flour plant where he worked, cooked a porridge for his family using the first wheat that had been processed. He referred to it as “Cream of Wheat” since the earliest wheat is regarded to be of the highest quality.

One of the mill’s owners in New York received a sample of the porridge from him, and the tale was formed. B&G Foods has added Cream of Wheat to their line of products.

Cream of Wheat is safe to consume for most dogs. Dogs, on the other hand, are susceptible to allergies, much like other animals. Wheat allergies are frequent, but not life-threatening, in dogs, despite the fact that food allergies account for just 10% of all allergies in dogs.

Dogs with itchy skin, ear irritation, diarrhea, sneezing and anal itching, as well as frequent flatulence, should be examined by a veterinarian if any of these symptoms are present.

Treating an allergy in a dog is as simple as avoiding the food that causes the allergy in the first place. In most cases, antihistamines or steroids will have little or no impact.

Wheat-free treats — If your dog isn’t allergic to wheat, you can give him some of your warm breakfast. Pour the contents of three 2-1/2-oz. jars of baby food (beef or chicken) into a dish and mix thoroughly.

Bake the balls for 15 to 20 minutes at 350 degrees in an oven that has been prepared (until they are brown). Serve them as a treat when they’ve cooled. It is possible to freeze and defrost them for later use.

Serving Ideas

The morning Cream of Wheat is a fine addition to your dog’s diet, but it should not be used as a substitute for his regular kibble in the morning.

Combine three 2.5-ounce jars of baby food (beef or chicken) with 1/4 cup milk powder and 1/4 cup Cream of Wheat to make your own snacks. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15-20 minutes, or until the balls are browned. Allow to cool to room temperature before serving, or store in the freezer for later thawing.
