I wanted to know how long reticulated pythons live and how long it takes for them to grow up, so I did some research.
I did this research because it’s important to know how long each species of snake grows and how long it takes them to get to that length when deciding which type of snake to buy.
So, how long do reticulated pythons take to grow, and how big do they get?
One of the longest snakes in the world, the reticulated python can grow up to 32 feet long. However, most adults are only 20 feet long.
During the first few years of a reticulated python’s life, they can grow more than 5 feet in a year. However, after about the first three years, their growth rate slows down.
If reticulated pythons can grow so long, how long do they live? And since they are so big, are they dangerous? Can you own a reticulated python as a pet?
How are things out in nature? After hearing how long these huge pythons are, I had so many questions that I decided to do some more research and report back to you all.
The reticulated python is one of the longest snakes in the world. It is a constrictor species that is not native to Florida.
Females are much bigger than males. Most females in the wild are between 13 and 16 feet long, but in rare cases, they can get as long as 20 feet.
They have a blotchy, net-like pattern of white, tan, brown, yellow, and red scales all over their bodies.
Two things that make a snake stand out are a straight, dark line down the middle of its head and red-orange irises that circle vertical pupils.
The skulls and jaws of these pythons are pointy, and they have a lot of small teeth that face backward.
The reticulated python likes it when it’s hot and humid in the tropics. They can live in places that are dry for part of the year, but not in places that are always dry or very cold.
They often live near rivers, streams, or other bodies of water, but they may also live in caves, trees, or areas of the ground that are hidden by plants.
Since they mate at different times of the year, female reticulated pythons may not lay eggs every year. Most of the time, females lay 20–40 eggs in a clutch.
However, the size of the clutch depends on the size of the female, and giant females may lay more than 100 eggs.
When the female python is incubating her eggs, she wraps them in a way that protects them from light, the environment, and predators.
Things About Reticulated Pythons
In Asia, where they live, these pythons eat a wide range of animals, such as wild boar, birds, fish, rodents, chickens, small monkeys, and almost any other kind of animal.
The reticulated python lives in southern and southeast Asia, as far south as Indonesia and as far north as parts of India and China. These snakes live anywhere from sea level to 4300 feet above sea level.
People have seen reticulated pythons as far north as Largo, which is near Tampa. However, most sightings are in southeast Florida, near Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
Most likely, these pythons were pets that got out or were let go. This species has not yet been introduced to Florida’s ecosystem. Look at the places in Florida where the species has been seen.
Reticulated pythons fight with native species for food and a place to live. Because of its varied diet, the reticulated python may eat birds and animals that are on the federal list, like burrowing owls and other birds of concern.
Since they like wet and warm places, they aren’t likely to move much farther north, either. Their reproduction is mostly seasonal, so they can go years without having babies. This limits their ability to cause harm.
It’s Crazy how Big Reticulated Pythons Get
Reticulated Pythons are the biggest snakes in the world, and as we found out, they can grow very quickly. This made me curious to learn more about them.
What amazes me about the length of reticulated pythons is what it says about how big they are.
A reticulated python can be up to 350 poundsed pythons is what it says about how big they are. A reticulated python can be up to 350 pounds! What a crazy thing!
I couldn’t imagine keeping an anaconda as a pet because it is such a big snake. But reticulated pythons are much bigger!
People also keep them as pets. I’d be swooning right now if you could do that online.
Can You Have a Reticulated Python as a Pet?
When buying a reticulated python, you should be careful to buy from a reliable source, and you should almost always buy from a breeder because buying a reticulated python that was caught in the wild can cause a lot of problems.
Both their personalities and the parasites they carry could cause these problems.
Even though reticulated pythons can be kept as pets, zoos strongly recommend against it. Zoos ask people not to keep these snakes as pets because of how big they are and how much food they eat.
They also ask people not to keep them as pets because of how long they live. Imagine keeping a really big snake for twenty to thirty years.
After ten or twenty years, it’s easy to get tired of feeding and housing it. Zoos suggest that you find a different kind of snake to keep as a pet.
If you want to keep a reticulated python as a pet, you should know a few things. How much space does your Python require:
Because these species are not small, they need a big space to live in.
This fence should be about 10 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 3 feet high. It is very important that the enclosure is safe and has a lock so the python can’t get out.
The floor of the enclosure needs to be made of either aspen or cypress mulch, and it needs to be changed often.
To keep your snake healthy, you need to give it the right amount of heat and moisture. Lamps and pads that heat up have been shown to work.
Reticulated pythons are very interested in food, and most of them won’t eat food that has already been killed.
Give them a good-sized meal every 7–10 days that is about as thick as the thickest part of your snake.
Some zoo experts say that these species would be better off in the wild because they are so hard to care for.
How Long do Reticulated Pythons Live?
Reticulated pythons are some of the biggest snakes in the wild and in zoos, and they live for a long time compared to other snakes.
On average, reticulated pythons live for 15 to 20 years, but some have been known to live as long as 30 years.
Unlike many snakes, which live longer in captivity, reticulated pythons live the same amount of time whether they are in the wild or in a zoo.
Are Reticulated Pythons Dangerous?
Even though reticulated pythons rarely hurt people and are not known to hunt them, they are still dangerous, and there have been reports of them killing people.
Reticulated pythons, on the other hand, are more calm and don’t seem to want to hurt people very much. Since they are constrictors, reticulated pythons do not have poison.
After biting their prey, reticulated pythons wrap their bodies around it and squeeze it to death. Their prey will die quickly, mostly because it will suffocate and rarely because it will be crushed.
But it goes without saying that, of all the big snakes, the reticulated python is the one that attacks humans the least, and probably the least.
How do Reticulated Pythons Live in the Wild?
Reticulated Pythons are only found in Southeast Asia, where they do well in the humid jungle. Most of the time, they live near water, so you can find them near rivers, streams, and ponds. These animals are predators.
Because of their colour, they can blend in with the floor of the rainforest, where they wait for animals that aren’t paying attention.
People say that reticulated pythons are very aggressive when they need to defend themselves.
They will lift their heads off the ground and hiss loudly before repeatedly attacking the animal that is in their territory.
After catching their prey, reticulated pythons would often hide in a crack or cave until the next meal. Since they are reptiles that only come out at night, they spend most of their time sleeping.
Since reticulated pythons are so big, their food must also be big.
A reticulated python will typically eat medium to large-sized animals such as monkeys, pigs, birds, and deer.
Because their prey is so big, they can swallow it whole. This means that a single meal can keep a reticulated python alive for several months.
Reticulated pythons mate in the wild, and the female gives birth to between 20 and 100 eggs, depending on how big she is. As the snake gets bigger, so does her nest.
After the female reticulated python lays her eggs, she will spend the next few months watching over and protecting them until they hatch. This is strange because most snakes don’t take care of their eggs.
What do Reticulated Pythons look like?
Even though most of this species are pretty big, there are some dwarf reticulated pythons that only get to be 7–12 feet long.
How many teeth do Reticulated Pythons have?
About 100 teeth are in a reticulated python’s mouth. All of them point backwards toward the back of the snake’s mouth. This helps the snake wrap around its prey and strangle it.
What is a Reticular Python morph?
A reticulated morph python is the same species as a reticulated python but has a different colour pattern. Breeders have made 18 different kinds of reticulated pythons that are all perfect.
