When Chansey, the 10-year-old pug belonging to Kevin and Candace Thaxton, became ill at the end of last year, they first attributed it to old age.
The little dog began drinking excessive amounts of water and defecating in the home, both of which are symptoms of renal failure. When the Thaxtons brought Chansey to the veterinarian, her kidneys had shut down and she was in a great deal of discomfort. She died two days later.
“It was extremely challenging. It was really awful! “ABC News spoke with Kevin Thaxton.
A few weeks later, however, when their new Pekingese-mix puppy Penny exhibited the same symptoms as Chansey, the Thaxtons were forced to go through the ordeal once again. This resulted in a fresh hypothesis on Chansey’s death.
When Candace Thaxton received a Food and Drug Administration notice that there had been more complaints concerning chicken jerky dog treats produced in China, she immediately realized what had happened to her pups.
Candace said, “I grabbed the candy bag and flipped it over.”
When I saw “Made in South Carolina” for the first time, I felt I was safe. Then, upon closer inspection, I saw that it was made in China. I responded, “Oh no.””
Officials told ABC News that in the last four months, the Food and Drug Administration has received over 530 complaints from pet owners whose dogs became ill or died after eating Chinese-made jerky snacks.
In the last four years, the FDA has issued three warnings concerning Chinese jerky snacks, advising dog owners to carefully monitor their pets for symptoms of illness if they feed them to their pets.
Since the government has not established a “clear reason” for the mystery ailments, it has not blamed Chinese treats, named any of the well-known American firms like Purina that sell them, or recalled the items. Dog owners and legislators are now demanding action.
The potential threat to dogs arises at a time when the safety of food imported from other nations is under rigorous scrutiny. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Thursday that dozens of recent outbreaks of ailments caused by food were caused by imported goods.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed outbreaks from 2005 to 2010 and determined that imported food caused 39 outbreaks and over 2,300 illnesses. About 45 percent of the outbreak-causing items originated in Asia.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tested samples of the snacks and is investigating claims of sickness and death. A spokeswoman for the FDA said that the samples were collected from around the nation, but refused to specify which locations provided the samples.
In 2007, when the first wave of complaints about Chinese chicken jerky snacks arrived, the FDA issued its first warning against them. In 2008, a second warning was issued.
When the FDA issued a third warning at the end of 2011 in response to another increase in complaints that year, the agency requested that individuals report any additional potential issues immediately. Hundreds more dog owners have come forward after that update to express their concerns.
The Thaxtons report that their dog Penny improved once they stopped feeding her goodies. They are now part of a group of pet owners who believe the FDA has not done enough to safeguard their four-legged family members in the years that it has been aware of the issue.
Petition Demands Recall of Chinese Dog Treats
The renal failure of Susan Rhodes’ 14-year-old German Shepherd mix, Ginger, prompted her to establish an online petition demanding that Chinese-made chicken jerky snacks be banned from sale.
While Ginger’s condition improved when she stopped receiving goodies, Rhodes claims that her elderly dog is still sick and unlikely to recover. There have been 3,800 online signatures added to her petition in 11 days.
“A simple notification isn’t enough for me. Quickly take the goods down off the racks, “To quote Rhodes: “Any other response except to insist that everything is alright. That doesn’t mean everything is well. Unfortunately, my dog seems to be sick.”
Nestle Purina’s representative, Schopp, claims that their brand has not been singled out in any FDA advisories. Even though the FDA has issued warnings against the chicken snacks, he argues that the illnesses reported may have been caused by something else. He explains, “We’re constantly anxious whenever a consumer has a query regarding our items.” We’ve given this some thought and we’re currently giving it some thought.
According to Pet Food Institute employee Kurt Gallagher, no business would knowingly produce anything harmful to pets. He cited the FDA’s warning as the reason for the increase in complaints and said, “People are excessively sensitive, so if any health concern comes up, they quickly believe, ‘This may be what’s wrong.'”
Jack, a four-year-old, otherwise healthy dog, began showing symptoms in January, and Holly McCutcheon says she thinks it was due to chicken jerky snacks imported from China. To alert pet owners to the potential danger, she attended a recent news conference with Senator Brown.
