Measuring Your Dog for a Collar

Your dog’s neck shouldn’t take you more than a minute or two to measure. The best way to do this is with a flexible measuring tape.

If you don’t have a soft measuring tape, you can use a ribbon or string, and then use a ruler to measure the string or ribbon.

To get an exact measurement, wrap the tape measure around the base of your dog’s neck, right behind their ears.

If you’re using a string or ribbon, wrap it around your dog’s neck in the same spot and hold on to the ends so you can use a ruler to measure it later.

Once you have it in the right place, write down the number where the end of the measuring tape, string, or ribbon comes back around to make a full circle. This is how big your dog’s neck is.

Add a few inches to this number to account for the size of the buckle and how much slack you want in the collar. As a general rule, add 2 to 3 inches for small dogs, 3 to 4 inches for medium dogs, and 4 to 5 inches for large dogs.

This can change, though, based on how your dog is built and what kind of collar you use. If you’re using a martingale or a prong collar, for example, you’ll want to leave less slack than if you were using a regular flat buckle collar.
